“Nature to the thoughtful, will always remain a vast and delightful storehouse, the fountain of inspiration.” John F. Carlson
I started painting in oils when I moved to the Georgian Bay area of Ontario in the mid 1990s. I prefer to paint on site, whether it is on rocky shorelines of nearby lakes, on rolling hills and in woodlands, or just out the back door in my perennial flower garden.
My goal in each painting is to capture the light. It may be the subdued atmospheric light of an overcast autumn day or the bright warm light of a sunny summer afternoon. Since light continually changes, it is essential to paint quickly to capture that fleeting moment. By immersing myself in the subject matter I hope to transfer onto the canvas my emotional response to a scene. If a viewer responds to these feelings, I feel that the painting was a success.
