Oil Painter

My main inspiration comes from the beauty of nature and the simple things around me.  In a landscape every location has a sense of place and it is difficult to get that connection from a photograph alone. That is why I prefer to paint from life. I feel there is a better opportunity of capturing the essence of a landscape if I am standing in front of the scene taking in the whole experience of the outdoors.  This is true for portrait painting as well. To see beyond the photographic image of a person it is best to have some time working directly from the sitter. However, not all paintings can be done on site, especially large canvases. This is when I may paint a small sketch on site, take reference photos and then work on the larger project in my studio.
